Our Philosophy
As an early childhood educator for over 30 years, it is my goal to prepare children for kindergarten in a fun, exciting, positive way. Instilling a love of learning in each child is my goal.
Our “home preschool” consists of a small group of children – five at most. Each child learns at his or her own pace and receives lots of individualized attention. Our small group size also enables me as teacher to get to know each child’s strengths, weaknesses, individual styles and personality.
It is my experience that children are motivated to learn when they are offered a variety of hands-on activities that spark their interest. Topics that tie in with the current seasons and interests of children inspire them to learn, ask questions, share ideas and want to learn even more. Providing choices during activities and group times afford children the opportunity to use their imaginations, think critically and build upon what they’ve already learned.
Recently, we have incorporated a high scope approach into our curriculum. During each day, children are invited to participate in four unique group times. During these times, new topics are discussed, letters are learned, numbers are counted, shapes are matched, games are played and stories are read. Children take an interest in learning as all activities are hands-on. Scissors, crayons, markers, paint, Play-Doh, blocks, Legos, loose parts, magnets, buttons, dice, magnetic boards, felt boards, and many other materials are included daily.
Because of my love of nature and the outdoors, our environment consists of a plethora of natural materials, such as rocks, shells, pine cones, sticks, stumps, logs and textured items. We have even included real stumps indoors, just for fun.
Children enjoy the uneven and unique surfaces of outdoor objects, and find it fun to have them indoors.
Children are capable of learning so many things at a young age. Given the right kind of environment and learning opportunities, each child can learn and grow in a fun, exciting way. And they will find that they really do love to learn!
